PTBOCanada Featured Post: Kawartha Montessori School Open House October 25th
/Oftentimes, outside of picking their child’s name, a parent’s hardest decision can be centered on the educational path in the early years. In the past, most decisions were made based on geographical location; your child was simply sent to the neighbourhood school and that was that. There are, however, some other incredible opportunities available to enhance your child’s learning experience that you might not be aware of!
Since its establishment in 1982, Kawartha Montessori School has provided a unique educational experience for local youngsters. The school has grown from a single classroom to nearly 100 students aged 2 ½ up to 14. For all of you keeping track, that’s pre-school to Grade 8. It is the only accredited Montessori School in the area and is an independent, not for profit entity run by a board of directors made up of both parents and alumni.
The school is pleased to be hosting a Public Open House on Saturday, October 25th from 10 a.m. to Noon to introduce prospective families to the Montessori philosophy and to the school itself. To help highlight the school’s features, staff along with current parent and students will be on hand to answer questions and share their accounts of the experience your children can expect.
THE UNIQUE MONTESSORI CURRICULUM
The Montessori curriculum and approach to learning is vastly different from that of the traditional system and others available. The Montessori Method was developed over a hundred years ago by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. Her approach to education is well-known as being child-centred and extremely successful. Montessori education not only provides students with a rigorous academic program, but encourages children to look at the world in a big-picture way and consider their place in it.
Montessori curriculum fosters a child’s learning experience in many ways. Here are 6 essentials ways it does so:
1. Montessori Curriculum is based on the developmental stage of the child
2. Children are introduced to concepts in a progressive and methodical manner
3. The child's interests are carefully considered
4. Subject matter is diverse and well-rounded at all age levels
5. Outcomes are not only academic
6. The sky is the limit
KMS ACCREDITATION
KMS is fully-accredited through the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA). Maria Montessori never patented or trademarked her pedagogy, therefore parents must be extremely vigilant when researching schools to know that what they are getting is an authentic Montessori experience.
Accreditation is a parents guarantee that a school is authentic and delivers a high quality Montessori program. Montessori education does not require any add-ons or enhancements to be successful. The accreditation process is rigorous and very thorough. Having Montessori-trained teachers and a full set of Montessori materials is only a small (albeit important) part of what makes these schools authentic. See ccma.ca for more about KMS’s accreditation.
If the thought of giving your child a different learning experience has piqued your interest, there are many ways to follow up with KMS and find out more about what the school offers.
