On Monday, the Peterborough Police Fraud Unit were reported two incidents of fraud through a rental scam. Both times, the victim responded to an ad for an apartment on Facebook Marketplace. They were given a tour of the apartment in the Brock Street and Reid Street area and sent roughly $1,000 each to secure the same apartment.

Once the payment was made, the potential landlord stopped contact with the victims and they were never given access to the apartment. Officers attended the apartment and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Fraud Under $5,000 X2

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

The Peterborough Police Service is releasing the suspect’s name in this case since they believe there are more victims.

Anyone with information is asked to call Peterborough Police Service Detective Constable Ryan Black at 705-876-1122 x214 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
