Lakefield College School (LCS) is one of Canada’s top independent high schools. Not only is the school itself incredible, but the people, events and opportunities that come with it are like no other!

Here are a few interesting tidbits you probably didn’t know about this unique boarding and day school in the Kawarthas...

1. Famous Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s three children—Kyle ‘00, Evan ‘03 and Kristin ‘04—are all graduates. Evan was the "man behind the astronaut", facilitating Hadfield’s brilliant social media blitz while out in space (2012-2013).

2. Annual springtime traditions include Gladiator Games in the month of May when LCS students compete for paper house points with events like water-jousting.

3. Each winter, LCS students take part in the “K-Rod” event (human dog-sled racing, based on the Iditarod).

4. His Majesty King Felipe of Spain ’85 attended LCS for his senior year, returning for his 25-year class reunion in 2010.

5. LCS students and staff—Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (of the Mighty Mos)—won the coveted Wispy Lips Creative Competition for unique fundraising events, raising almost $8,000 for Prostate Cancer in Movember.

6. Famed vocalist Sebastian Bach ‘86 attended LCS for two years between 1981-1983.

7. LCS alumnus, actor Will Arnett (Arrested Development), made LCS his home for 4 years!

8. LCS students have trekked through rich geographic and cultural landscapes during school trips, such as Mt. Elbrus, Russia; Mount Everest Base Camp, Nepal; Amazon River, Peru; Cambodia; and Masai Mara, Kenya.

9. Highest peak LCS students have climbed on a school trip: Mt. Cotopaxi (5,897 m), which has a two metre lead over Kilimanjaro (5,895 m)—another expedition LCS students took

10. In 2009, LCS student Cody Ceci was drafted to play for the OHL Ottawa 67's, and is now a defenceman for the the Ottawa Senators.

11. Hockey Hall of Famer Bob Gainey’s daughter, Anna Gainey, is a graduate of LCS (1996) and the first woman to become President of the Liberal Party of Canada.

12. Principal at Lett Designs, Bill Lett ‘92, is responsible for some incredible architecture in Peterborough (the Market Hall renovation, for example) and across Canada.

13. LCS alumna and Rhodes Scholar, Erin Freeland-Ballantyne ‘99, started the first land-based university—Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning—in the Northwest Territories. It was even visited by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their Canadian tour!

14. LCS graduates have gone on to attend some of the top Colleges and Universities around the world, such as University of Cambridge, U.K.; Imperial College of London, U.K.; Harvard University, USA; Stanford University, USA; and ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland.

15. During Outdoor Education class, students have the opportunity to practise their paddling skills while heading into Lakefield to Tim Hortons or Stuff’d for ice cream. How cool is that!?

17. The Class of 2013 was offered more than $2.37 million in university scholarships!

18. LCS hockey players have gone on to play at universities including Princeton and Harvard.

19. The Horton River = the longest river paddled by LCS students on a school expedition, at 560 kilometres!

20. Alumnus actor Matt Frewer ‘76 (Max Headroom, PSI Factor fame) was a boarding student for four years.
