Art of Lime & Tadelakt Plasters

Lime has been used in plasters for thousands of years, and it is highly valued by modern plasterers for its balance of weather resistance, permeability, strength and flexibility. It is very versatile and can be used in thick base coats and fine polished finish plasters. It can also be perplexing, with a variety of types of lime available, and chemical reactions occurring between lime and clay or other mix materials. Black soap applied to the surface of a lime plaster can add shine and water resistance – this is the key to tadelakt, a polished waterproof lime plaster originating in Morocco, but it can be used on other lime finishes.
