Fleming Night Hits Peterborough Memorial Centre For Petes Game On Feb. 13

The Peterborough Petes are hosting college students again with Fleming Night when they host the Ottawa 67’s at the Peterborough Memorial Cetnre on Feb. 13.

The night celebrates Fleming students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Members of the Fleming community, including alumnus and social media influencer Brendan Carpenter, will participate in a ceremonial puck drop. Announcements recognizing Fleming College will play throughout the game.

The game is the second part of a home-and-home series between the two teams being played on back-to-back days.

Peterborough Petes to Host Mental Health Awareness Game This Thursday

The Peterborough Petes are hosting a mental health awareness game as they host the Flint Firebirds at the Peterborough Memorial Centre this Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

The game is in partnership with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch.

The game day experience will have several features to promote the importance of mental health, including: 

• A CMHA-run kiosk on the concourse where fans can learn more about mental health and the organization’s community-based services 

• A ceremonial puck drop with the CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch

• Videos featuring Petes players talking about the importance of mental health 

• Public service announcements about mental health and the CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch

• A CMHA fundraising component 

The key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. Each team is also linked to a CMHA mental health coach, who provides support and mental health resources to needy individuals.  

“Talk Today shines a spotlight on mental health awareness, demonstrating how sports and community agencies can unite for a common purpose,” said Jack Veitch, CMHA HKPR manager of community engagement and education and Petes mental health coach. “Thursday’s game celebrates our community's commitment to mental health while reminding everyone of the support services available. Through this partnership, the Peterborough Petes continue to show exceptional leadership in fostering a culture of mental health awareness and support.”

“We’re very excited to once again be partnering with CMHA HKPR for our annual mental health awareness game,” said Eric Ebenbauer, Petes senior director of sales. “Talk Today is such an important initiative as it educates our players and staff about the importance of mental health and provides support services to those in need. Thursday night will be a great opportunity to show the community the benefits of the program, while also spreading awareness about the Canadian Mental Health Association and all the great work that they do.”

Peterborough Petes Pick Up Pair of Wins During Weekend Stretch

The Peterborough Petes picked up four points after getting wins in back-to-back games over the Brampton Steelheads and the Oshawa Generals.

The wins were part of a three-game stretch where the Petes played on back-to-back-to-back games.

After falling late to the Brampton Steelheads at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday, the Petes got revenge on the back end of the home-and-home series, defeating Brampton 5-4 on Friday. Peterborough had lost 4-3 to the Steelheads on Thursday after coughing up two goals in the third period.

Caden Taylor led the team with a goal and an assist, while Aiden Young and Rio Kaiser had two assists. Braydon McCallum, Martin Matejicek, Brady Stonehouse and Colin Fitzgerald all scored. Jonathan Melee, Blake Gowan, Liam Ladds,and Nico Addy each had an assist. Easton Rye stopped 37/41 for his eighth win of the season, being named the first star of the game.

The Petes returned home to battle their rival Oshawa Generals for their Pink in the Rink game in support of Pedal for Hope, a part of Cops for Cancer at the Canadian Cancer Society.

Peterborough defeated the Generals 3-2 in a shootout to finish the three-game stretch on a high note.

Before the game, the Petes held a ceremony commemorating Pedal for Hope and their accomplishments, raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer. The ceremony also contained a video collage featuring pictures of loved ones, family members, and friends of the community who have battled cancer.

The game featured several fundraising activations in support of Pedal for Hope. The fundraising total for the 16th annual Pink in the Rink campaign will be announced in the coming days.

“It was another successful year of Pink in the rink,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “The atmosphere in the rink was incredible. I want to take this time to thank everyone who came out and contributed. Not only did we raise a lot of funds, but also a lot of awareness for Pedal for Hope and pediatric cancer research. I’d also like to recognize the effort of the Petes Staff, Pedal for Hope team, and all of the volunteers who made tonight such a success.”

Zach Bowen stopped 38/40 in the win. Genc Ula and Quinton Pagé scored, while Colin Fitzgerald, Braydon McCallum and Jonathan Melee each had an assist.

The Petes stay at home Thursday for their Talk Today game when they host the Flint Firebirds. The game is in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Peterborough Lakers Partner With Fleming College Students For Business and Marketing Consultation

As a final project for 39 Fleming College students, they are providing business and marketing consultation for the Peterborough Lakers in a partnership announced at the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame on Friday morning.

The students are from the General Business program within Fleming College’s School of Business and IT Applied Projects class. The collaboration will run until April for the undergraduate students.

“This collaboration project is to build awareness and sales for the Peterborough Lakers,” said David Swales, program coordinator and professor. “The project itself is to create the strategy and identify deliverables; we’re acting like consultants.”

Students are responsible for conducting research to create a consulting package on how to raise ticket sales and gain sponsorships for the Lakers. Pete Dalliday, Lakers director of community engagement, laid out an overview of the organization’s current status and goals of what they are looking to achieve.

Swales says the students are well-equipped with the tools to effectively help the Lakers reach their goals.

“So many of them have such great social media skills so there’s a lot of expertise they can bring,” he explained.

After the Q&A session, the students were given a tour of the facility and treated to briefly watch an ongoing hockey game at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Peterborough Petes Defenceman Named OHL Academic Player of the Month

Peterborough Petes defenceman Carson Cameron has been announced one of the Academic Players of the Month for January by the Ontario Hockey League on Friday.

The 17-year-old from Bobcaygeon native currently excelling academically at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School. He has 86 per cent average in Grade 12 Advanced Functions, an 81 per cent average in Physics and excellent grades in Interdisciplinary Studies, Healthy Active Living and Physical Education.

“Carson is a leader both on and off of the ice,” said Shannon Fifre, Petes academic advisor.” He participates in all team community events while maintaining a high academic average. He was taking academic overload as he was finishing up courses online while attending school,”

The first-round (13th overall) pick in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection has appeared in 43 games this season with seven goals, 13 assists and 20 points. In 102 regular season contests with the Petes, the 6-foot-2, 193lb. blueliner has registered 46 points (11-35-46).

NHL Central Scouting listed Cameron as the 87th-ranked North American skater eligible for the 2025 NHL Draft in their recently released midterms.

Peterborough will get a rematch Friday night against Brampton as the second game of the home-and-home series at CAA Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Unable to Hold Lead, Lose Late to Brampton Steelheads 4-3

The Peterborough Petes had the lead for majority of the game but could not hold it as the Brampton Steelheads made the comeback victory 4-3 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday night.

Peterborough had a good start as captain Johnathan Melee scored just 44 seconds into the game. They struck again as rookie Colin Fitzgerald added to the lead just two minutes in for the 2-0 lead. Late in the period, Brampton was able to get on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 after the first period.

The second had only one goal courtesy of Brampton’s Jakub Fibigr with less than four minutes left in the period for a 2-2 tie.

The Petes regained the lead just 86 into the period as Melee struck again for a 3-2 lead. At 7:48, Peterborough native and Steelhead Porter Martone tied the game with a wrister shot at close range on Petes goaltender Zach Bowen for a 3-3 tie. Brampton was on the attack later in the game as a point shot was blocked. The puck came loose and went to Lucas Karmiris’s stick and he buried it at point-blank range for the 4-3 lead, the first for the Steelheads of the night. They were able to hang on and defeat Peterborough to leave with the win.

Peterborough Petes Unveil Pink in the Rink Jerseys; Donations Being Accepted to Support Pedal For Hope

The Peterborough Petes have unveiled their 2025 Pink in the Rink jerseys to be worn on Feb. 1, in support of Pedal for Hope, announced on Monday afternoon.

The game is when they host the rival Oshawa Generals. The jerseys were designed by Kyle McDonald of Pioneer Inc. and feature two special shoulder patches. The left shoulder bears the Canadian Cancer Society logo, while the right shoulder shows the logo of this year’s ambassador, Pedal for Hope.

The Pedal for Hope tour is a part of Cops for Cancer at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). In addition to supporting pediatric cancer research, the Pedal for Hope tour also raises funds to support the Pediatric Family Counselling Service. This program provides support to families and children coping with a cancer diagnosis, as well as young adults who have surpassed their diagnosis as they transition into adulthood.

Last season, the Petes Pink in the Rink Campaign surpassed the $1 million mark in funds raised for cancer research over the 15-year history of the event. The team announced a fundraising goal of $50,000 on Nov. 28. Fans can donate to the 16th annual Pink in the Rink Campaign online.

The Pink in the Rink Campaign will be supported by several activations this year. In addition to the Pink in the Rink t-shirts, an in-person silent auction during the game and an in-person game-worn jersey auction will take place on the ice post-game.

This year, fans are encouraged to send pictures of their loved ones battling cancer. The pictures will be featured on the video board during the game. Pictures can be emailed to imacgregor@gopetesgo.com before Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

Peterborough Petes Get Series Sweep With Fireworks Show In 8-6 Win Over the Saginaw Spirit

The Peterborough Petes kept the lamp lit, beating the Saginaw Spirit in a high-scoring affair, 8-6, for the series sweep at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Thursday night.

The night started well for the visitors and the Spirit rung off three goals in the first half of the period. Things started to look bleaker as Peterborough was shorthanded late in the period. However, the Petes forced a turnover in the offensive zone as Brennan Faulkner intercepted a pass, fed Aiden Young the puck and deked Saginaw goaltender Kaleb Papineau for the Petes’s first goal.

In the final minute of the frame, Petes captain Johnathan Melee got the puck from the faceoff in the offensive zone. He threw the puck at the net and hit top shelf to cut the deficit to one goal after the first.

The Petes were able to tie the game up with the man advantage in the second period. Taylor won the footrace to the puck, centred a pass to the slot and Braydon McCallum tipped it home for a 3-3 game.

Saginaw regained the lead six minutes later thanks to Hayden Barch but Peterborough kept battling. Less than two minutes from that goal, Martin Matejicek took the puck coast-to-coast and beat Papineau five-hole to tie the game again. The Petes were not finished that period as Genc Ula wanted his turn from going end-to-end as he got the puck in his own zone, got into the opposing end and wristed it in from the point for the Petes first lead, 5-4.

Peterborough continued their offensive prowess to open the third as Brennan Faulkner found the scoresheet. Rio Kaiser won the puck battle after a dump and chase. He fed it to Faulkner, who made a wraparound bid and scored for a 6-4 lead. That was Kaiser’s first OHL point with the assist.

The Petes kept their foot on the gas pedal as they were on the powerplay. They won a board battle in the offensive zone corner as Young soccered the puck to his stick, passed it to the slot for an approaching Matejicek who one-timed it for a 7-4 Petes lead. With the Spirit having their backs to the wall, they fought back to make it close. Jacob Cloutier got a power play goal and Dimian Zhilkin followed up 36 seconds later to make it a 7-6 game.

With life still in Saginaw, they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with just under three minutes in regulation to try and tie the game. Peterborough nailed the insurance marker after winning another board battle from behind their own net. McCallum ended up with the puck and sent it nearly 200 feet for the empty-net goal and an 8-6 win.

The Petes hit the road across Highway 115 and onto the 401 to take on their rival Oshawa Generals at the Tribute Communities Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

U16 and U18 AAA Peterborough Petes Victorious In Opening Games For the Steve Richey Tournament Hockey Championship

The U16 and U18 AAA Peterborough Petes kicked off their Steve Richey Tournament Hockey Championship with tallies in the win columns on Thursday.

The U16 Petes dominated the U16 Markham Majors in a 6-3 win at the Healthy Planet Arena.

Peterborough opened the game with five straight goals as Dean Sheridan, Garrett Jones, Keaton Legacy, Nathan White and Lucas Cavanaugh scored.

Markham scored their first goal in the final minute of the second period.

Peterborough scored once more in the third, thanks to Joseph Gallagher, to make it 6-1. Markham scored twice more, but Peterborough easily hung on for the 6-3 win.

The U16 Petes remained undefeated, defeating the U16 Chatham-Kent Cyclones 2-1 at the Healthy Planet Arena Friday morning for a 2-0 record. They will play a second game on the same day against the U16 Elgin-Middlesex Canucks at the Peterborough Memorial Centre at 6:30 p.m.

The U18 Petes won a close game against the U18 New Liskeard Cubs, 2-1, at the Miskin Law Community Complex on Thursday evening.

Rowan Turner opened the Petes early in the first period for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Cubs scored on the powerplay to tie it at one for the period’s only score.

Petes captain Cameron Meek broke the tie late in the third with just over five minutes left to make it 2-1. That would be the game-winning goal, and the U18 Petes would have their first win of the tournament.

The U18 team battled the U18 York Simcoe Express to a 2-2 tie at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Friday morning. The result gave Peterborough a 1-0-1 record.

The Petes will play against the U18 Burlington Eagles at the Peterborough Memorial Center at 8:15 p.m.

The event is a showcase tournament for the AAA-level U16 and U18 players. Several hockey scouts are in attendance for the event. Many players are already OHL prospects, while others may have been overlooked or attempting to make a good impression to potentially be drafted.

Almost 60 teams are competing in the tournament. It runs for four days, from Thursday until Sunday. Semifinals and finals occur on the Sunday.
