Fleming College Honours First Athletic Season of Student-Athletes As Phoenix With Awards Banquet

Fleming College had a night of celebration and recognition of their Phoenix athletes during the annual varsity athletic award banquet on Friday night.

During the College’s 51st athletic banquet, it was the first as the Fleming teams and student-athletes were recognized, marking the end of the first season for the newly branded Phoenix that was introduced.

More than 125 Fleming students participated in seven varsity sports, including soccer, volleyball, loggersports, curling, men’s basketball, cross country running and women’s rugby sevens.

In addition to the presentation of awards for athletic success, 30 student-athletes were also recognized for their academic successes after achieving an honours-level grade point average (GPA) while competing.

The following awards were presented:

Erin O’Rourke Memorial All-Around Athlete: Presented to a male and female athlete who performed at a high level while demonstrating leadership, commitment and dedication.

  • Montana Rank – Women’s Volleyball

  • Scott Morris – Men’s Volleyball

Jack Barley Memorial Athlete of the Year: Presented to a male and female athlete who performed exceptional achievements within their sport while maintaining academic eligibility.

  • Sarah D’Hondt – Loggersports

  • Ben Perreault – Men’s Volleyball

Rachel Spearing Award: Presented to a women’s rugby player who demonstrated heart, spirit, sportsmanship and dedication on the field.

  • Chloe Bender – Women’s Rugby Sevens

Kris Starr and Adam Evans Award: Presented to a loggersports athlete who shows heart, spirit, dedication, and love of the sport.

  • Blake Fellman – Loggersports: Kris Starr Award

  • Rory Lauckner – Loggersports: Adam Evans Award

All-Academic Award: Presented to the athlete with the highest academic average who achieved a balance in their sport and in academics.

  • Suzanne Mooser – Loggersports

Fred Batley Coach of the Year Award: Presented to a coach driven by the passion they have for their sport, who goes above and beyond to create a positive atmosphere and ensure their student-athletes have the best possible experience.
· Jordan Ross – Men’s Volleyball

OCAA Academic and Athletic Excellence Award: Presented to OCAA athletes who achieve an honours GPA at their college as well as receiving an OCAA honours award.

Peterborough Museum and Archives Announce New Exhibit With Fleming College

Fleming College students and Peterborough Museum & Archives have launched a new exhibit ‘Words & Beyond: How Communication Brings Us Together’ that started Saturday.

The Peterborough Museum & Archives is curating the exhibit by Fleming College’s Museum Management and Curatorship program students that explores how communication has shaped Peterborough and the surrounding area.

Everyone is invited to visit the exhibit to discover how we connect and the wider world.

It opened in the Heideman exhibit space on Saturday and continues until June 16. The official exhibit will open on April 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring music, snacks and activities.

“We’re excited to share this fun, new exhibit by the talented up-and-coming museum professionals from Fleming. Communication shapes our lives now more than ever, but has also played a key role in our local history,” said Susan Neale, Peterborough Museum and Archives director. “There’s so much to say so come talk about it.”

Admission is by donation. The PMA is wheelchair and stroller-accessible and free parking is available.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: March 12

The Fleming Phoenix took home several top finishes including a first overall team finish for the men’s team at the 62nd Macdonald College Loggersports Competition at McGill University on March 9.

With a first overall finish for the Phoenix men’s A team, they had wins in the following competitions:

  • First: Stock Saw, Log Decking, Pulp Throw, Standing Block Chop and Underhand Chop

  • Second: Team Crosscut, Team Swede, Water Boil, Wheelbarrow Race and Pole Climb

  • Third: Single Buck and Quarter Split

The team consisted of Kaden Bulmer, Blake Fellman, Brayden Holubowsky, Charlie Scott, Thomas Switzer and Tristan Godin-Mercer.

The men's B team saw wins in the following competitions:

  • First: Pole Climb

  • Second: Log Decking and Pulp Throw

  • Third: Stock Saw

The B team included Adam Groth, Mitchell Blackman, Jordan Brown, Thomas Kitchen, Coltan Ross and James Hollingsworth.

The Phoenix women's A team saw the following results:

  • First: Pulp Throw

  • Second: Axe Throw, Single Buck, Wheelbarrow Race, Standing Block Chop and Team Swede

  • Third: Team Crosscut, Log Decking, Super Swede, Underhand Chop

Team members include Sarah D’Hondt, Madelyn McInnes, Mattea Miller-Evans, Darian Carpenter, Rory Lauckner, Maggie Hope and Katrina Leslie.

The women's B team had the following wins:

  • First: Pole Climb

  • Second: Log Decking

Their team comprised Rene Urwin, Suzanne Mooser, Holly Smith, Isabel Andonian, Hunter Delicate and Thyme Kennedy.

All teams compete on March 23 at Dalhousie University.

The Phoenix men’s extramural cricket team played in the RECCup championship, held on March 7 at Fanshawe College.

They fell in their first match to Humber 34-33. In their second match, the Phoenix lost to Conestoga 29-28.

In the elimination match, the Phoenix bounced back, beating Fanshawe 41 to 39 to advance to the semi-finals where they lost to Conestoga 35-31.

Fleming College Offering Free Tax Clinic For Eligible Residents During March

Fleming College is offering free tax clinics to any eligible persons this March.

Administered through a program with the Canada Revenue Agency, the community tax clinics are supervised by Accounting program instructors and organized with the help of Enactus Fleming College’s Keys to Me program. Photo courtesy of Fleming College.

The clinics are open to eligible community members and Fleming students. Accounting students provide the clinics as a hands-on learning experience in their chosen field.

Clinics take place each Monday from March 4 to April 1 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus.

To be eligible for the free clinics, individuals must:

  • Have an income of $35,000 or less for individuals

  • Have a combined income of $45,000 or less for a couple

  • Have a combined income of $47,500 or less for a family of three

  • Have a combined income of $50,000 or less for a family of four

Students will not prepare returns for anyone self-employed, for those who have capital gains or losses, employment expenses or have filed for bankruptcy.

Eligible residents can make an appointment at the clinic by emailing taxclinic@flemingcollege.ca, or registering online. Walk-ins can also be accommodated depending on availability.

Free parking is available for residents travelling to the Sutherland Campus for the tax clinic. Fleming requests that anyone coming to email the clinic in advance with your licence plate information and date of arrival to qualify for the free parking.

Anyone attending the clinic is asked to bring the following information:

  • Social Insurance Number

  • T2202A Tuition Receipt (if applicable)

  • Rent Receipts for rent paid in Ontario in 2023 (if applicable)

  • Medical expense receipts

  • T4 Statement of Income (provided by your employer if you worked in Canada in 2023)

  • Any other tax related slips you may receive in the mail, like a T5 or a T3 slip (for investment income)

  • International students and new Canadians filing a tax return for the first time will need to provide their date of arrival in Canada

Fleming also welcomes eligible residents to drop off their tax information.

Fleming College Business Students Benefit In New Partnership With Peterborough & Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce

Fleming College and the Peterborough & Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce have partnered to create a student membership program where business students can attend the latter’s monthly events and access its resources, announced on Thursday.

Students in Fleming’s International Business Management and Global Business Management programs can take advantage of the opportunity.

The Chamber’s multiple networking events allow students to engage with local entrepreneurs, tour local businesses, meet the region’s industry leaders and establish connections in the business community.

Fleming students can also access and attend Chamber-hosted webinars and seminars. Access to the Chamber’s job board, newsletter subscription and online Knowledge Hub is also included.

The Chamber will also host two events at Fleming College, bringing the region’s business community members to the Sutherland Campus.

This new membership program is available to first-semester students in the Winter 2024 and Fall 2024 semesters.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Feb. 28; Fleming Defeats Trent University 2-1 For Hockey Tournament B Championship

The Fleming Phoenix women’s hockey team took home a B championship over Trent University with a 2-1 win during a six-team tournament at the Lindsay Recreation Complex on Friday.

Fleming kicked off the tournament with a win, routing George Brown/Humber 7-1. Jorja Peltier stopped all but one shot between the pipes. Abby Todd scored two goals, Kendra Keyes had one goal, Jordyn Brown had one goal and three assists, Carlyle Ouellet had one assist and Nikyla Trtik capped the win with a hat trick and two assists.

The Phoenix lost a tightly defensive game in a 1-0 loss by Durham/Ontario Tech in round-robin play.

In the B championship game, the Fleming Phoenix defeated Trent University 2-1, to take third place in the tournament. Megan Rivet and Hannah Schnurr each tacked on a goal for the win.

Durham/Ontario Tech won the tournament with a 3-0 win over Georgian College, while George Brown was awarded the Fair Play award.

The Phoenix men’s and women’s extramural hockey teams will participate in the RECCup regional tournament on Friday in Brantford.

JA-NEO and CPD Partner To Launch Accessible Welding Program at Fleming College

Junior Achievement of Northern and Eastern Ontario (JA-NEO) and the Council for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) have launched the Accessible Welding Program in partnership with Employment Ontario and Fleming College on Tuesday morning.

The program is aimed at creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to pursue careers in the skilled trades according to a press release.

The initiative aims to address the underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in the trades by providing accessible training and support.

“We are thrilled to launch this innovative program in partnership with the Council for Persons with Disabilities, Employment Ontario and Fleming College,” said John McNutt, JA-NEO president and CEO. “By fostering inclusivity and accessibility in the skilled trades, we can unlock the potential of individuals with disabilities and strengthen our workforce.”

The specialized curriculum will have tailored support services for the participants as they will gain the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the welding profession.

“We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their career aspirations, regardless of disability," said Rachel Quilty of CPD. “Through the Accessible Welding Program, we aim to dismantle barriers and create pathways to success for individuals with disabilities in the trades.”

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Feb. 13

The Phoenix men’s basketball team lost their final two regular-season games at home this weekend.

On Friday, a full house was at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (PSWC) as the Phoenix hosted the La Cite Coyotes. The Phoenix had two strong quarters but lost 77-61 to the Coyotes.

The high scorer for the Phoenix was Shawn Blackwood with 22 points including nine rebounds, five steals, six turnovers and two blocked shots. Jason Diaz had 10 points with five rebounds, four steals and one turnover. Lystra White had nine points with five rebounds, two steals and one turnover.

The Phoenix welcomed the Algonquin Wolves to the PSWC for Saturday's final game of the regular season. The Phoenix had a solid second quarter in this close game but it wasn’t enough as they lost another nailbiter to the Wolves 97-92.

High scorers for the Phoenix included Jesean Wilson with 28 points, including four rebounds, one blocked shot and one turnover, Shawn Blackwood with 23 points and Orlando Carias with 12 points.

The Phoenix men’s volleyball team travelled to Kitchener on Sunday to kick off their playoff run against the first-place western division Conestoga Condors. The Phoenix had a strong start, winning the first two matches, 26-24, and 25-22 but could not hold off the Condors who took the next three matches, 25-16, 25-17, and 15-11 to lose three matches to two.

Phoenix Sam Deschenes had 20 points in the game including 18 kills, five digs and one ace. Phoenix Hunter Hoskins also had a strong game with 10 points, including nine kills, six digs and one ace.

The two Phoenix mixed doubles curling teams participated in the OCAA championships in Sault Ste. Marie from last week Wednesday to Saturday.

The mixed doubles team of Ben Potter and Miranda Jensen were held to 0-6 in the seven-team round-robin play but were awarded the Fair Play award for the tournament.

The Phoenix mixed doubles team of Cameron Fraser and Brook Parcels finished their round-robin play with a record of 3-3, moving them on to the semi-finals. The team came in fourth overall after dropping their game in the bronze medal match.

Fleming Basketball Player Gaining National Recognition

Fleming Phoenix’s Shawn Blackwood of the men’s basketball team has gained provincial and national recognition by being named to several honours.

The Ajax native was named one of the Fleming Phoenix Athletes of the Month for January, an OCAA Athlete of the Week and a CCAA Athlete of the Week.

Blackwood attends Fleming for their Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program. He joined the basketball team last month, averaging 27.5 points, shooting 59.4 per cent from the field and averaging almost 10 rebounds in his six games with the team.

On Jan. 30, Fleming lost a narrow 103-101 overtime road game to the Loyalist Lancers. Blackwood led Fleming with 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Feb. 7

The Fleming Phoenix came up short in several sports but the cricket team made good impact as finalists at the Centennial Extramural Cricket Tournament last Thursday.

The team won two of their three matches and beat Cambrian 1 in the semi-final to advance to the finals. Fleming fell to Cambrian 2 in the finals by 19 runs. 

Phoenix’s Helin Minesh Patel had the highest number of runs in the tournament, with 182. He earned 262 points which placed him third overall. Teammate Aryan Panwar placed sixth overall in the ranking of tournament players with 194 points and second in fielding with 100. 

The Phoenix men’s cricket team plays next on Feb. 28 at Georgian College. This is the RECCup regional, and the top two teams from this tournament will move on to the RECCup which will take place on March 7 at Fanshawe College in London.

The men’s basketball team lost another close game as they were defeated 87-80 by the Seneca Sting during their game on Friday.

The Phoenix's high scorers were Orlando Carias with 19 points, Shawn Blackwood with 19 points and Jason Diaz with 14 points.  

They play their final two games of the regular season at home. The Phoenix will welcome the La Cite Coyotes to the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre (PSWC) on Friday. It is a special Youth Night for the Peterborough Youth Basketball Association (PYBA) and fans will receive Phoenix swag and cheerstixs. 

On Saturday, the Phoenix welcome the Algonquin Wolves to the PSWC for their final regular-season game at 3 p.m. 

The Phoenix men’s volleyball team will kick off their playoff run on Sunday. They travel to Kitchener to face the Conestoga Condors. Game time is 1 p.m. 

The two Phoenix mixed doubles curling teams are heading to Sault Ste. Marie to participate in the OCAA championship from Thursday to Saturday.
