PTBOCanada's #PetLovePTBO Campaign Raises $4,000 For the Peterborough Animal Care Centre

After community support from PTBOCanada’s #PetLovePTBO campaign, $4,000 was raised and donated to the Peterborough Animal Care Centre in a cheque presentation at the facility on Friday morning.

“It's community helping community,” said Shawn Morey, Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) executive director. “It's all about us working with our local community to continue the spread of wellness from an animal perspective so it's greatly appreciated all the way through.”

The campaign started in November last year, where toques (men's and women’s) and dog toys were sold to raise funds. This was two months before the PHC moved into the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC).

To date, the PACC has received $10 million in donations. Most of them were from the community and $1,560,500 from the provincial government in April. The Centre is still seeking another three million to help fund community programs, services and enhanced animal care.

“We'll have the ability to expand outwards, doing more outreach, more community service support, provide better opportunities from a care-enhancement perspective that we want to do for animals within our care,” explain Morey. 

The PACC’s grand opening occurred in late June and they immediately felt the impact of the community’s needs since relocated to Technology Drive. The shelter has a surplus of dogs available for adoption and is a crisis for PACC as they are seeking homes for them.

“With the number of animals we're getting calls for surrenders and strays coming into our care, our demand for services has grown by over 105 per cent since the second we walked in here,” said Morey. “It's timely, we need this building to provide these services, provide the care and wellness that we were able to do so but we are in a bit of a crisis mode.”

There are 42 dogs available for adoption but the PACC has a capacity for 36. They are currently not accepting surrenders but will still take in strays. Dog adoptions are by appointment only and can call 705-745-4722 x 201 to set one up.

Peterborough Humane Society Receives $50,000 Donation From Miskin Law Towards Animal Care Centre

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) is one step closer to its capital campaign goal as local law firm, Miskin Law, has donated $50,000 towards the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) announced on Wednesday.

“We are so grateful for our incredible local businesses, like Miskin Law, that go above and beyond to support our organization’s evolving mission to provide more programs and services for animals and people in our community,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

As a result of the donation, a dedication ceremony of the PACC’s Boardroom recognized Miskin Law, being identified on an outside bench and on the Donor Wall located in the Centre’s lobby.

“We are so happy to be here, with our beloved pets, to celebrate the new facilities. Today, and only today, this room belongs to our dogs,” said Murray Miskin, Miskin Law founder. “We know that the Boardroom will be a great community resource and will help Peterborough Humane Society staff day to day in getting their vital work done.”

“The PACC’s Adoption and Education Centre, including spaces like the Boardroom will allow us to expand our services,” said Morey. “We are able to not only offer more opportunities to our staff but also provide a community space for individuals, local businesses and service groups looking to rent out a space for meetings and functions.”

The Peterborough Humane Society launched its latest stage of the capital campaign known as ‘The Home Stretch’ to raise the final $3 million needed to meet the $13 million goal for the Our Pet Project.

Peterborough Humane Society Celebrates the Grand Opening of the Peterborough Animal Care Centre

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) celebrated the official Grand Opening of the Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) on Saturday.

Local dignitaries, capital campaign donors and community members were in attendance for the ribbon cutting and speeches, which took place at 1999 Technology Drive in Peterborough.

“This is a ground-breaking day for animal wellness. The original concept was dreamt up over 10 years ago. It is such a privilege to officially open the doors and commemorate this day with our supporters,” said Shawn Morey, executive director at the Peterborough Humane Society. “Thanks to the hard work of our staff and volunteers, and the support of our community we have made this dream of bringing this state-of-the-art facility a reality.”

The celebratory event catered to all members of the community, including furry friends. The Pet Zone featured a lure course, dog pools, ball pits and more for animals to enjoy. Visitors enjoyed a barbecue out on the new patio, and had the opportunity to learn about all the services provided at PACC. Face painting, crafts and chalk drawing made for a fun day for kids.

“It is so amazing to see everyone come together to celebrate this exciting day. From the volunteers and staff working the event, our local business community joining in the festivities and those who came out to celebrate; every bit of support means the world to PHS. This Centre was built because of the incredible support from our community,” said Morey. “To have this leading-edge facility in Peterborough is truly momentous and will advance our entire region forward.”

Peterborough Humane Society Receives $10,000 Donation From Docupet

Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has received a donation of $10,000 from the City of Peterborough’s official pet licensing partner, DocuPet announced on Wednesday.

“This donation will go a long way in supporting the care we provide animals in our community. From reuniting animals, taking in strays and surrenders and everything in between, every dollar counts in the care of these animals.” shared Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

DocuPet is a pet profile, lost pet and licensing solution business that joined PHS in 2019. This donation came from DocuPet’s Safe&Happy Fund that collects automatic donations through designer license tag purchases as well as direct donations. 

Licensing fees collected annually contribute to the PHS’s daily operational expenses according to a press release.

Peterborough Animal Care Centre Receives Grant of Over $1.5 Million From Provincial Government

The Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) has received a grant of $1,560,500 from the Minister of Infrastructure of the Province of Ontario to continue its building development and expansions announced by MPP Dave Smith and the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) on Friday morning.

The funding will aid in several programs and project completions such as an off-leash public access dog park, trail system, memorial patio and garden space according to Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

"It's directly supporting our programming, we're doing a lot of kids camps, we're going to be doing some programming around responsible pet ownership and facilitation of adoption,” he said.

The PACC had known about the funding for roughly over a year but was finalized around Christmas according to MPP Dave Smith. He says the work PACC does in conjunction with the Solicitor General’s office was obviously to lobby for the facility to receive government funding.

“The Humane Society, they are the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals locally. They do a lot of that work for us and work with the Solicitor General's office,” explained Smith. “We recognize what's happening in the greater Peterborough area and I'll even go beyond Peterborough County. The facilities they had previously weren't big enough to do a lot of things they needed to do.”

To that point, the PACC had been community-funded however Morey says that they are still seeking $3 million to finish it. There could be more requests down the road for building expansion within the next few years.

“This center has been built by the community, for the community. That's one of our big statements with making this come to fruition,” said Morey. “It's been 10 years in the making since we initially had this concept of building this state-of-the-art facility completion. Plus we have additional phases that we're going to look at over the next few years to help advance the building.”

Peterborough Humane Society Packs Its Bags To Move Into the New Peterborough Animal Care Centre

It’s moving day for the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) as they have begun shifting their operations from their Lansdowne Street location into the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) on Tuesday.

Roughly 100 animals were moved to the new location but the space is not yet open to the public. The Peterborough Humane Society closed its Lansdowne Street operation as of Saturday. It served as a holding facility for the animals. The new PACC features an animal adoption and education centre, a spay-and-neuter clinic and a dog rehabilitation centre.

It has already been funded by almost $10 million in community donations but requires another $2.5 million to complete all projects and construction according to Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

“We're just doing some final finishes and final touching that need to be done to get us prepared for occupancy and allow the public to come on-site,” he said. “Staff can get into the space because a lot of them haven't been in this space yet, get to know the facility and experience it. We can test out all the bugs and make sure that it's ready to rock when we can open to the public.”

Individuals, organizations and groups have helped fund the animal care centre and Morey is grateful for the outreach and support of the new building.

“It just shows the pride that Peterborough has for their animals,” he said.

Services that were available at the Peterborough Humane Society are still provided during the move such as licensing (new or renewals) and appointment-only viewings and adoptions are available.

A soft opening is projected for mid-February with a grand opening planned in the spring.

Tuesday also marks ‘Betty White Day’ as she was renowned for her passion for animals and her acting career. The day was created shortly after her passing prior to New Year’s Day of 2022 and was an initiative to encourage the world to contribute to animal welfare. Last year, roughly $20,000 was raised for the PACC in honour of the late beloved actress. A count has not yet been released since the PHS is still awaiting a final count.

Peterborough Humane Society Moves Operations to New Animal Care Centre; Betty White Fundraiser Day On Tuesday

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has begun moving its operations to the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) and has closed the Lansdowne Street location announced on Friday.

The new location is at 1999 Technology Dr. as the Lansdowne Street location finally closed after 65 years on Saturday. 

Construction for the new centre is not fully complete with minor projects in progress internally, with landscaping and other outdoor developments that will continue into the spring according to a press release.

“This is an exciting time at PHS, but as it will take us a bit of time to settle in we appreciate the community’s patience and support as we make this transition. We are pleased and very proud to soon welcome everyone to our new home to experience this community space, built to revolutionize animal wellness.” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

PHS is also celebrating “Betty White Day” on Tuesday to help raise funds for the PACC.

“Last year the ‘Betty White Challenge’, celebrated in honour of the late philanthropist’s 100th birthday, helped PHS raise over $20,000,” said Morey. “We hope the community will honour Betty again this year and will celebrate our big move with us by contributing to our capital campaign.”

Peterborough Animal Care Centre Receives Cabinet Donation From Varcroft & Bianco

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has received cabinet donations for the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre’s (PACC) staff office space and Spay & Neuter clinic courtesy of Varcroft & Bianco announced on Wednesday.

“Everyone at our shop has pets and understands the important role the Peterborough Humane Society plays in the health and well-being of the animals in our community,” said Brad Bates of Varcroft & Bianco. “We thought we could use our expertise and manufacturing facility to help out where we can with what we do best.”

“We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of resources and support our community has put into this new Centre. Varcroft & Bianco were very generous to not only donate the custom-made cabinetry but also to put their incredible talent and efforts into the space through the design, build and installation,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director. “These kitchens will service our staff, community members, as well as organizations that will utilize our Humane Education & Multipurpose Room, which will be available to the public for rentals.”

The donation is valued at around $25,000 and Varcroft & Bianco is being identified as a community partner within the PACC.

Humane Society Seeking $3 Million in Funding to Complete Peterborough Animal Care Centre

With the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) less than six months away from moving into the Peterborough Animal Care Centre, the shelter is seeking $3 million to complete the project.

The centre is located at 1999 Technology Dr. where construction began in May of last year. The fundraising goal was at $10 million since then.

“Spreading the word, donating and endorsing the project is what we need right now to get us into our new home,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director. “The Peterborough Animal Care Centre will truly revolutionize animal care, not only in Peterborough but for our greater region.”

“The project is currently on budget and following the timeline, which has been a challenge with Covid-19. But thanks to the many local contractors, suppliers and the hard work going into this project we’ve been able to stay on track. The pillar of this project is the funding, and with the community’s support we can achieve our goal in revolutionizing animal care in Peterborough and beyond.”

The Centre is projected to be completed by the year end according to the Humane Society.  The building will be over 24,000 sq. ft. and include a state-of-the-art Animal Adoption & Education Centre, Publicly Accessible & High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic and Canada’s first Dog Rehabilitation Centre created in partnership with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society.

Peterborough Animal Care Centre Recieves $260,000 Grant From PetSmart Charities of Canada

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Humane Society received a $260,000 grant for the Peterborough Animal Care Centre on Thursday.

PetSmart Charities of Canada donated the grant. The 24,000 sq. ft. Peterborough Animal Care Centre will be home to the Peterborough Humane Society’s Adoption & Education Centre and Regional Spay and Neuter Clinic as well as the Ontario SPCA Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre.

Construction is well underway and slated to be completed at the end of 2022. Fundraising is ongoing and PetSmart Charites of Canada’s support moves both PHS and the Ontario SPCA even closer to their goal.

PHS will use grant funds to purchase medical equipment required for the regional high-volume spay/neuter clinic within the new centre. The Spay/Neuter Clinic (which will serve the public as well as other animal rescue organizations) will provide up to 25 surgeries a day, helping 5,000 pets and their families each year according to the PHS.

"PetSmart Charities of Canada has been a phenomenal partner on this journey to the new centre,” shares Shawn Morey, PHS executive director. “Their support brings us that much closer to being able to raise the bar in animal care in our community and beyond.”

$75,000 of the grant will go towards the Ontario SPCA Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre. The Dog Rehabilitation Centre will be custom-built to help dogs who need more support and individualized care than an animal centre can provide. It will contain several unique features, including a real family living room to help dogs practice living in a home environment.

“We are grateful to receive this grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help bring the Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre to reality,” says Dr. Stephanie Black, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society chief veterinary officer. “Once complete, this centre will fill a critical and significant gap in current services by addressing the individualized needs of dogs most difficult to adopt.”

PetSmart Charities of Canada has cumulatively contributed over $421,000 towards the innovative new animal care facility located at 1999 Technology Dr. in Peterborough.

“We recognize the need for accessible health and wellness services for pets, which is why we are excited that the new Animal Care Centre will help bring those services to the Peterborough community,” says Dani LaGiglia, PetSmart Charities of Canada senior community grants manager. “Not only will the centre help more pets find homes, but it will help more pets receive the care they need to support their health and well-being.”
