Fundraisers Make A Splash At 36th Annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim

Carl Oake started this event 36 years ago. He says he was inspired by the work the Easter Seals did because of his relatives. His mother’s twin sister contracted polio in the 1950s while a cousin of his was born with spina bifida - both physically debilitating diseases.

The donations gathered by the annual swim go to the Easter Seals - an organization that helps children, youth and young adults with physical disabilities. They also go to The Rotary Club of Peterborough.

As Oake chatted with friends and reporters at the swim, he dropped everything when Mitchell McColl came onto the pool deck.

McColl was the Easter Seals ambassador in 2012, and has attended the Carl Oake Swim every year since.

“That’s why we do it,” Oake said, gesturing to McColl.

T-shirts worn by participants feature a photo of Oake and McColl from the 2012 swim.

Presented by Baker Tilly, to date this event has fundraised $1.32 million for Easter Seals and Rotary Projects in the area.

“This is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Wayne Harding, president of the Rotary Club. “With the $1.32 million we’ve done lot’s of great projects around the community over the years. We founded Camp Kawartha, we recently built a shade shelter in Rotary Park - if you walk around the community you’ll see lots of Rotary plaques.”

The Carl Oake Rotary Swim fundraising page will remain open to donations until March 11. To help them reach their goal of $45,000, click here.

Rotary Club Performs Armour Hill Stunt To Promote 36th Annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim

To promote the upcoming 36th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swim fundraiser, Wayne Harding, Rotary Club of Peterborough president rode down Armour Hill in a kiddie pool filled with water on Sunday.

Wayne Harding (pictured) has performed past stunts such as being pushed in a shopping cart off a dock into Clear Lake and paddling the Lift Lock while firefighters sprayed him with fire hoses. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

“Last year, we tried to do this stunt but we got four inches of snow on the day. The pool wouldn't move so we wanted to redo that,” said Harding. “It is minus five according to my car. I'm wearing a bathing suit and I'm soaking wet but hey, life's grand."

A goal of $50,000 has been set where fundraising efforts will go towards Easter Seals and the remaining proceeds for Rotary projects in the community according to Harding. To date, over $1.3 million dollars has been raised for Easter Seals and Rotary Projects.

The annual Swimathon is on Feb. 25 at the YMCA of Peterborough. The public is encouraged to participate in the event or perform a virtual swim or splash at home while raising funds and sharing it on social media tagging the fundraising’s Facebook page.

Participants can register as an individual or as a team online where they will be assigned a fundraising page. The public can also make a donation directly via the website and receive an instant tax receipt.

Splash Challenge at Peterborough Lift Locks For Easter Seals Fundraiser

It will be tough to top this water challenge!

Wayne Harding, Rotary Club of Peterborough president, his son Jackson Harding, Easter Seals ambassador Mitchell McCall and brother Eli McCall got blasted with a fire hose twice while paddling in the canal below the Lift Locks on Monday afternoon.

The soaking was part of the Carl Oake Rotary Splash Challenge encouraging Peterborough families to film or photograph aquatic activities such as water balloon fights, pool dives or anything to get wet. It began back on May 17.

The challenge doubles as a fundraiser where all proceeds will go towards Rotary projects in Peterborough and Easter Seals.

“The needs of the community don’t go away, in fact, they probably increase as we all know,” said Rick Storey, Rotary Club of Peterborough. “This has been good to have some fun, having some smiles and we will raise some money for Easter Seals and Rotary Club which is fantastic.”

The challenge replaced the 35th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swimathon typically held at the Balsillie Family YMCA pool every February. It could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over $1.2 million has been raised during the 35-year span helping Rotary projects such as the Habitat for Humanity Youth Program, Homeward Bound Program, Family Day at Del Crary Park and Strong Kids program at the YMCA.

The challenge replaced the 35th annual Carl Oake Rotary Swimathon typically held at the Balsillie Family YMCA pool. It could not be held due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

The fundraising challenge runs from May 17 to June 19 where proceeds go towards Easter Seals helping physically disabled children and rotary projects in Peterborough.

Participation includes sharing photos and videos on social media while using the hashtag #CarlOakeRotarySplashChallenge.

With the Rotary Victoria Day Fireworks cancelled for the second year in a row, funds to help disabled children are needed more than ever according to event organizers.

Over $1.2 million has been raised during the 35-year span helping Rotary projects such as the Habitat for Humanity Youth Program, Homeward Bound Program, Family Day at Del Crary Park and Strong Kids program at the YMCA.

On their centennial anniversary, the Rotary Club has built a shade shelter on the Rotary Greenway Trail, contributing to refurbishing transitional housing units with the YES program, and a new health centre at Camp Kawartha.

Oake’s daughter and Century 21 United Realty broker Vanessa Hogan Oake has organized the event with her firm as she takes over the partnership.

“I’m honoured to carry on this event that was started by my father,” she said.

“It’s fun and to be safe and follow the rules until everything opens up,” said Rick Storey of the Rotary Club of Peterborough. "Use your imagination, the sky is the limit, the water is the limit.”

Donations can be made online at the Rotary Club’s official website.
