Holy Cross Students Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Event Was A Thing Of Beauty

This year's Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event for YWCA takes place May 27th, but in the build up to the big day many local schools—Holy Cross, Crestwood and Kenner—are hosting their own special events to raise money and awareness among students.

On a beautiful Tuesday (May 3rd), Holy Cross students and staff hosted a great day at their school to show their support for Walk a Mile and promote healthy relationships.

More than 50 staff and students participated, walking four laps on the school track in heels.

UPDATE: Lakefield District Secondary School Is Closing

UPDATE (March 30th): The board decided last night to close Lakefield District Secondary School. LDISS will consolidate with TASSS in Peterborough beginning in September 2016. Give us your thoughts on its closure on our Facebook page, and what impact you think it will have on students and this small rural community.

LDISS to close. KPR trustees supported the motion to consolidate LDISS and TASS and move Ridpath to the highschool property.

The future of Lakefield District Secondary School is up in the air due to declining enrolment numbers.

Accommodation reviews have been undertaken by Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB, and a final decision is expected Tuesday night (March 29th) at a public school board meeting at the KPR board office on Fisher Drive.

If the school closes, students will attend Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School in Peterborough.

The LDISS Is Open Committee Working To Save School

The future of Lakefield District Secondary School is up in the air due to declining enrolment numbers. Accommodation reviews are being undertaken by Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB to determine its future, and if closed high school students would attend Thomas. A Stewart instead—starting as soon as September 2016 possibly.

The Accommodation Review committee is holding a number of public meetings to discuss the student accommodation needs at this school. Throughout this process, the review committee will share information from the community that will inform the final administrative recommendations on its future.

Parents and community members are invited to attend, and to make presentations at the following committee meetings:

Monday, November 9, 2015               (6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Lakefield DSS)
Monday, December 7, 2015               (6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Lakefield DSS)
Wednesday, January 20, 2016           (6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Lakefield DSS)

For the past few months, a committee called the LDISS Is Open Committee has been tirelessly working on options to keep the school open. The committee is a group of concerned citizens—some who attended LDISS and others who live and work in the community or neighbouring townships—and do not wish to see this school closed forever. 
 

LDISS Is Open Committee encourages current and former students, LDISS parents, parents of children at the feeder schools (Apsley, Warsaw, Buckhorn, Ridpath and Curve Lake First Nations), and community members to come and hear the ideas being presented to the committee. The community will have the opportunity to ask questions at all of the public meetings.

Your Child Can Learn About Taking School Bus At Lansdowne Place First Rider Sessions

This is a great opportunity for parents to get their young kids onto a bus before the first day of school so they know what's happening and aren't caught off guard!

There are "First Rider" sessions at Lansdowne Place Centre Court (near the escalators) taking place Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th.

"First Rider" allows students—and their parents—to become familiar with the bus riding experience (and important safety rules) in advance of the new school year through this unique hands-on free event.

Registration is not required for these sessions, and the Dates & Times are as follows:
Friday, August 28th > ongoing sessions from 3 pm to 6 pm
Saturday, August 29th -> ongoing sessions from 9 am to 1 pm

Warsaw Public School Participates In Plow Painting Program

Peterborough County has a neat plow painting program that area schools participate in...

The plow painting program has taken place for the past few years, and is in line with celebration of Public Works Week in Canada (which is May 16th to May 23rd this year). The program is to raise awareness in schools of municipal public works and what they do—maintaining roads for the safety of the travelling public.

One of the latest schools to participate is Ms. Tibbles Grade 8 class at Warsaw Public School.

**Plows were also sent to Havelock Belmont Methuen School and Ridpath Junior Public to paint.

The plows are used again the next season by the County—and then sent out again to be painted by more schools.

Tweet & Text-Up: Fleming College Promoting Mental Health Awareness Through Bell Let’s Talk

Staff and students at Fleming College will promote the importance of mental health awareness through the Bell Let’s Talk initiative on Wednesday, January 28th.

The Counselling department, along with faculty and students in the college’s community services programs, are inviting students and employees to join in the conversation about mental health at a special tweet and text-up that will take place at the Sutherland Campus.

Bell will donate five cents to mental health initiatives for every tweet, text, email or long distance phone call made through the Bell network. All who would like to participate at Fleming are invited to wear a blue shirt and stand in the main foyer at 11:55 a.m. for two minutes of texting and tweeting.

“We would like to raise money for mental health awareness," says Fleming Counsellor Anita Arnold. "Myths about mental illness contribute to stigma so awareness is critical to dispel those myths and end stigma. Be aware of the language we use to describe mental health issues. Be kind to those who struggle with or have been affected by mental illness. Listen, ask questions and, most importantly, talk about it."
