How to Catch the Emerald Ash borer

Trap set up in Mark S. Burnham parkSet up by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, these contraptions which you may have seen around the Patch house a trap to catch the Emerald ash borer.

These green beetles are native to Asia and were accidentally introduced to North America in the 1990s. They are an invasive species and highly destructive to Ash trees.

Already, the Emerald ash borer has killed nearly 30 million Ash trees in North America and the losses are estimated in the tens of millions of dollars.

Peterborough's Trent Valley Literacy Association

TVLA Executive Director Teresa Kerr (on right) with fellow employee Jessica Easton

The Trent Valley Literacy Association (TVLA), which has been in Peterborough for more than 30 years, is a non-profit organization. It was formed to help adults in the Patch gain reading, writing, basic math and computer skills needed to live and work successfully in the community. The TVLA offers many programs, ranging from one-to-one to classroom learning.

TVLA held a yard sale fundraiser last weekend as they rely on donations to keep the project running. They are also always looking for volunteers who can share some time to tutor others. TVLA is located at 139 Douro Street, next to reBOOT

The Treasure Hunters Roadshow Is In the Patch Looking for Antiques

The Treasure Hunters Roadshow has been set up this week at the Best Western Otonabee Inn and they're looking to purchase your antiques. These include precious metals, jewellery, antiques and toys from before 1965, and other rare finds. There has been tremendous interest from Peterborough citizens, and the lineups have kept them past their 6 p.m. close-up time. Today, rare finds were a Beatles tray and a Martin guitar. The Treasure Hunters Roadshow will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. —words and pictures by Evan Holt

Peterborough Astronomical Association Invites You to Armour Hill For Special Viewing

Tonight (August 12th), the skies will light up as the Perseids meteor shower dances through the night sky. To help view this celestial show, the Peterborough Astronomical Association—a group of people who love space and viewing the night sky—is inviting folks up to Armour Hill (Asburnham Memorial Park) starting at 8 p.m. for a peek at this year's shower (let's hope there aren't any clouds, which will obscure the meteors). Although not necessary, there will be telescopes available to be able to see all the other wonders the night sky has to offer. The event is free. For more information on this event and about PAA, click here.  —Julie Morris, PtboCanada contributor
