Fleming College Partners With Kenjgewin Teg To Offer Practical Nursing Program On Manitoulin Island

Fleming College is partnering with Kenjgewin Teg to offer Practical Nursing training to Indigenous learners on Manitoulin Island, Ont. (Mnidoo Mnising). The two institutions recently signed a five-year agreement to offer Fleming’s Practical Nursing program through Kenjgewin Teg, an educational institute on Mnidoo Mnising that provides Indigenous culturally relevant learning.

“Fleming College is committed to Truth and Reconciliation and as a post-secondary institution, we have an opportunity and an obligation to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into our curriculum,” says Maureen Adamson, Fleming College President. “Fleming College is honoured to partner with Kenjgewin Teg and support the principles of Truth and Reconciliation that will create positive change in healthcare.”

Kenjgewin Teg will act as the service provider to offer Fleming’s Practical Nursing program, tentatively scheduled to start in Spring 2021. Theory curriculum will be delivered virtually, while clinical learning will be on-site at other key local partner locations including the Manitoulin Health Centre, St. Joseph's General Hospital Elliot Lake, Mnaamodzawin Health Services Inc. and Noojmowin Teg Health Centre.

“Going forward, our local Mnidoo Mnising and surrounding communities will continue to see more opportunities in health and wellness programs at Kenjgewin Teg as we continue working together with valued partners like Fleming College and other Indigenous institutes who support culturally relevant training and education hosted closer to home,” says Stephanie Roy, President of Kenjgewin Teg.

“Manitoulin Health Centre is excited to support a locally grown Practical Nursing program,” adds Paula Fields, Vice President Clinical Services & Chief Nursing Officer at the Manitoulin Health Centre.

“Recently, due to COVID-19 and additional opportunities for nurses, we have found a shortage of local nursing staff,” Fields says. “It is beneficial to offer a program locally as graduates will have ties to the Island and be aware of the unique diversity of the patients that we serve, resulting in positive outcomes for patients. It is really a win-win for the students and our Manitoulin Island communities.”

Fleming College Will Be Starting Fall Term Online And Then Plan Is To Transition To Face-to-Face Classes

Fleming College will begin the Fall semester using online and alternative delivery on September 8th. The College’s “Fleming Safe" plan will ensure that students can complete the learning outcomes required in their programs while maintaining the highest possible safety standards in compliance with all government and public health directives.

“Our Fall semester will be delivered through alternate models as we prepare for multiple scenarios for our campuses and classrooms to create the utmost in safe learning environments,” says Maureen Adamson, President, Fleming College.

“The plan allows flexibility to react to the loosening of health and safety restrictions by being ready to begin face-to-face, applied learning responsibly and appropriately. We do not anticipate that all health and safety restrictions will be lifted all at once—we are ready to respond swiftly to advance student success effectively given the circumstances that will present themselves,” she adds.

Fleming will work with community partners to re-establish field placements, field trips, clinical placements and other applied learning opportunities aligned with health and safety directives.

Teams assigned to academic programming and facilities protocols are now assembling detailed plans for the return to classes in September. Alongside planning for the return to class and access to campus facilities this fall, the college is also assessing how students will safely access residence, food services and athletics.

“I want to thank our students for their patience,” adds Adamson. “We are taking these steps to provide as much certainty as we can for students and their families at this point in time. In keeping with our guiding principle of ‘safety first’, we are dedicated to moving forward and mitigating any risk of recurrence.”

His Royal Highness The Duke of York Visited Lakefield College School For Its Annual Regatta Day

Lakefield College School was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of York on Saturday, May 25th for the school’s annual Regatta Day celebrations.

With one of the largest waterfront properties among Canadian boarding schools, the waterfront plays a significant role in the education of its students. For over 140 years, the school has been providing meaningful experiences through boating, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and other activities connecting students to the water and their environment, and Regatta Days are a longstanding tradition.

More than 700 students, staff, parents, alumni and friends joined in on the Regatta Day activities, which included an address from His Royal Highness The Duke of York. During his address, His Royal Highness The Duke of York spoke of his passion for Lakefield College School, referring to the time he spent as a student at LCS in 1977 and his belief in the school’s strength as an education leader.

“I recognized, whilst I was here, what this school meant to me. And I suspect those of us who have actually been here, understand what I am talking about. It is about the friendships that you make. It is about the environment in which you live, it is about the relationship that you have with your teacher, and the inspiration that they can give.  And if you combine that, and many other things, into consideration, it has made the most significant impact on each and every one of us who have been here.  I have always maintained very close relationships with what goes on here, because I believe that this is the school that leads when it comes to innovation in education, innovation when it comes to the way that we respect, and the way that we work with our environment.”

The new dining hall has been identified as one of the major priorities under “Community First” in the school’s latest strategic plan and will be situated in the heart of the beautiful campus, which is located on Katchewanooka Lake.

A gathering place for the entire community, the dining hall will be designed to strengthen and enhance the student experience and will be named in honour of the John and Jane Hepburn Family.

"With this new dining hall will come an array of opportunities for us to connect and learn from each other, as one community in one inspirational space,” says Anne-Marie Kee, Head of School and Foundation.
