12 Essential Winter Safety Driving Tips From Peterborough Police
/Peterborough Police remind citizens to slow down and drive the conditions. Please remember the following tips...
1. Be aware and be cautious. Weather conditions can deteriorate quickly or change as you travel.
2. Slow down and wear your seat belt. Posted speed limits reflect ideal conditions, but don't reflect wet or snowy conditions. Adjust your speed accordingly.
3. Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. On slippery road surfaces, double the two-second rule.
4. Avoid sudden turns of the steering wheel, and sudden braking and accelerating that could cause a skid.
5. Avoid situations where you may have to break suddenly on a slippery surface.
6. See and be seen. Always clear ice and snow from all vehicle windows to maximize visibility, and turn on your vehicle's full lighting system when blowing snow and white-outs impair your visibility.
7. Make sure you know how to use your braking system in all weather and road conditions.
8. Allow more time to get to your destination. Extra time is required to negotiate snow-covered roads.
9. Your vehicle's tire treads should be in good condition and you should always have plenty of windshield washer fluid to assist with visibility.
10. Pack an emergency kit and keep it in your vehicle at all times.
11. Snow and ice are more slippery at 0°c than at -20°c or below.
12. Watch for black ice at temperatures between +4°c and -4°c where the road surface ahead looks black and shiny. It is often found on shaded areas of the road, bridges and overpasses long after the sun has come out.

A Bunch Of VW Bus Campers Came To Peterborough From Around North America & It Was Awesome
/The 7th Annual Bus Volk Festival took place at Beavermead Campground last weekend, as a fine group of VW Bus Campers came to Peterborough from as far away as the United States for a weekend of food, friendship, and the love of old Volkswagen Campers. With so much to to do and so many great restaurants near Beavermead, the park is the perfect venue for out of town guests. The event started with a pub crawl on Friday night, then a huge pot luck on Saturday evening followed by a campfire jam that can't be beat. It was an awesome time and a great way to keep the park being utilized as a much needed campground close to the city. Check out the pictures below...

The Peterborough Patchbus Is Just About The Coolest Camper Van Ever
/The Wolf's Ken Elrick II—aka "Dr Patchbeard"—has the hippest set of wheels anywhere. Here, in his own words, he tells us about "The Patchbus"...
The Patchbus is a 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper that I purchased in the fall of 2012 from a nice hippie couple in Cobourg. I've been interested in cars my whole life and had been looking for a while for a project car to play around with. The idea of buying a VW bus didn't really cross my mind until my dad got one of his own about a year prior. Since buying it, I've learned a lot about working on it, having swapped the engine out myself. I've used it as a daily driver around Peterborough as well as gone on road trips and camping trips with it. The pop-top and bunk beds allow for four to sleep comfortably—as long as they don't mind cuddling a little bit—so it's perfect for long trips. One day, it will take me across the country. One day. —Ken Elrick II

Peterborough Woman's New Jewellery Shop Inspired By Trip To Haiti
/Stephanie Guyatt is the creator of Under One Sun, a new jewellery shop in Peterborough located out of her home at 236 Cowling Heights. Under One Sun came to be after Stephanie travelled to Haiti last Fall on a mission trip. She fell in love with a artisan co-op there that crafts the jewellery and which offers fair wages to feed, educate and house their employees' families. Although the jewellery is sold by some in the United States, Stephanie is the only one that offers it in Canada. The jewellery offered is made from sustainable items and is environmentally friendly. Much of the jewellery is made from recycled paper, Haitian clay, and recycled oil drums. Here's some pics...
Under One Sun will be hosting an Open House from September 6th to 8th and will be at the Creative Bean event on Saturday, September 14th.
